Bricks
I made a series of bricks in response to the intimidating size of the Civic Center Interchange, my chosen site for my thesis work. I wanted to make something i could hold in my hand and something that challenged the huge scale I was looking at.
I was also responding to the prevalence of brick as a building and paving material in Providence, as well as the frequent gaps in the brickwork.
Finally, I envisioned the bricks as meaning-making tools while they filled in the gaps in the sidewalks. I was inspired by magnetic poetry, and thought that the pieces could be moved around to create new meanings.
Ultimately, all of the bricks except the one at left were either removed or stolen. I sincerely hope they were stolen and kept as souvenirs of the streetscape.
